SYCAMORE COMMISSION: More Protection for the Prophetic

In our previous couple of installments, we addressed protecting the prophetic (click here to read the previous). Because the prophetic can be such a powerful tool in the Christian’s life and God’s kingdom, the Enemy will do whatever possible to discredit it. Therefore, we must emphasize the need to protect the prophetic.

Last time, we looked at the three components of the prophetic; revelation, interpretation, and application. This time we will look at protecting the prophetic from a different angle.

Always Subject the Prophetic to the Scriptures

The Scriptures are the more sure word of prophecy (2 Peter 1:20-21).   God’s Word is the standard to which everything else is measured and submitted. Paul states that the Scriptures are the standard for righteousness, correction, rebuking, and training (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The first question we must ask when we believe that we have received a prophetic word is, “How does it line up with Scripture?”  God will not give a contemporary message to us that is in conflict with the Bible.

Respect the Relationship and Role of Spiritual Authority

There has been much confusion and chaos surrounding the prophetic due to this principle being violated.  Spiritual authority, or God’s government, is a foundational principle in God’s kingdom economy. The Scriptures have many accounts that demonstrate how God regards those who discount or disregard spiritual authority in their lives (Numbers 12 & 16).

God has extended His authority on earth through people.  The Lord makes it clear that leaders will give an account for the leadership they exercise on God’s behalf. Also, we will give an answer to the Lord for how we submit to and follow those biblically qualified leaders God has placed over us.

If you live in interdependent community in a local church, and if you live subordinate toward spiritual leaders and authority in your life, you have engaged in a strong measure to protect from error and harm with the prophetic.

An Upcoming Opportunity

There is much more to say on the topic of protecting the prophetic, as well as the ways in which God communicates to His people. Our next Freedom Intensive, which will be offered October 19-21, 2017, will include an entire track of training devoted to Hearing God’s Voice. I invite you to join us. More information on that Freedom Intensive will be coming your way shortly.

A New Video Blog Series – Living Free Journal

Our next blog will begin a weekly video blog series of 2 to 3 minute sessions titled Living Free Journal. I trust you will be encouraged with its content and the fresh medium.
