Protecting the Prophetic
In our last installment we began to address protecting the prophetic against deception (click here to read the previous). Let’s now continue with that same theme in looking at preparation in protecting the prophetic.
There are three sources from which prophetic thoughts, words or messages can originate. The first is God. Second is the demonic realm. And third is self-generated as people. We want to minimize any source other than God by eliminating the demonic influence and our flesh from bringing mixture into hearing God’s voice.
We must begin by safeguarding our lives since God communicates to and through people. We must close every personal door of access to the demonic realm. In the book Living Free, Recovering God’s Design for Your Life we address the issue of the demonic gaining access and influence in our lives by our providing him with a rightful place of jurisdiction through sin and/or strongholds (thoughts and lies contrary to God’s truth). To safeguard our lives we must begin by living with a pursuit of setting ourselves apart to God and His righteousness.
Sin and strongholds are filters through which we receive and deliver God’s communication. For example, if I have a stronghold of anger in my life, that anger will become the filter through which I receive from the Lord, and through which I would convey that same message.
The message might be right, but if it is received and communicated in a wrong spirit, it in essence misrepresents the message. I have heard people speak truth, but under the surface was an edge of anger or bitterness; and consequently, the message was compromised.
The following are sins and/or strongholds that the Scriptures distinctly link an association to or influence by the demonic realm.
|OPEN DOOR OF SIN & STRONGHOLDS||SCRIPTURE
|Anger, Unforgiveness, Resentment||Ephesians 4:26-27; 2 Corinthians 2:10-11|
|Sexual immorality||1 Corinthians 5:1,5|
|Hatred, violence, disunity, lying||Luke 9:54-56; John 8:44|
|Jealousy, selfish ambition||James 3:14-26|
|Insubordination, rebellious/independent spirit, disobedience to God||1 Samuel 15:22-23|
|Occult Practices||Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:9-13|
|Idolatry or greed||1 Corinthians 10:19-20; Colossians 3:5|
|Living in a Violated Conscience||1 Timothy 1:19-20|
|Worldliness, gossiping, sensuality||1 Timothy 5:13-15|
Beginning with personal preparation of character and motivation is critical in protecting the prophetic. We will continue to look into how we protect the prophetic in our next installment.
